Complete list of Welsh Springer Spaniel health problems
Epilepsy is the major concern in Welsh Springer Spaniels, affecting about 6% of the breed. Breed researchers say that every Welsh Springer in the world has at least one proven carrier of epilepsy in his or her five-generation pedigree.
To make matters worse, epilepsy is particularly devastating in the Welsh Springer, with repeated seizures that don't respond well to medication and often lead to permanent brain damage or death.
Serious eye diseases are another major concern in Welsh Springer Spaniels, especially glaucoma and cataracts that can lead to blindness.
According to the Michigan State University Thyroid Database, Welsh Springers have a high rate of hypothyroidism, with up to 22% of the breed estimated to have low thyroid levels.
The most common orthopedic diseases are hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of 2500 Welsh Springers and found over 11% dysplastic. That's high for a medium-sized breed. Fortunately, elbow dysplasia is less than 2%.
Heart disease is another concern in the breed.
Allergies cause itchy skin and can lead to bacterial skin infections (pyoderma). A more serious skin disease that can occur in Welsh Springers is seborrhea.
Chronic ear infections are common in all of the spaniel breeds due to the abnormal shape of the ear canal and profuse hair inside the ears.
Preventing health problems
Some health problems are inherited. For example, if your dog inherits from his parents the genes for an eye disease called PRA, he will go blind and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
But most health problems can be prevented by the ways you raise your dog.
FREE eBOOK! My free online health care program, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to raise your Welsh Springer Spaniel in all the right ways that help prevent health problems. Become your dog's health care champion!
