Complete list of Swedish Vallhund health problems
Joint diseases can cause pain and lameness and may require expensive surgery. The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of over 350 Swedish Vallhunds and found 11% to have hip dysplasia. That's high for a smallish dog.
Elbow dysplasia and luxating patella (loose knee joints) must also be watched for.
On the plus side, the Vallhund seems to avoid the intravertebral disk disease seen in other short-legged, long-back breeds such as Welsh Corgis. This is because the Vallhund has only one defective mutation, while Corgis have a double mutation that not only shortens their legs and lengthens their back but also weakens the disks in their spinal column.
Hereditary eye diseases in Swedish Vallhunds include cataracts (which seldom progress to blindness), persistent pupillary membranes, corneal dystrophy, vitreous degeneration, and a form of retinal degeneration known as Swedish Vallhund Retinopathy.
Preventing health problems
Some health problems are inherited. For example, if your dog inherits from his parents the genes for an eye disease called PRA, he will go blind and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
But most health problems can be prevented by the ways you raise your dog.
