Complete list of Finnish Spitz health problems
Epilepsy is a serious concern in the Finnish Spitz, and diabetes occurs more often in Finnish Spitz than in most other breeds.
Finnish Spitz are susceptible to luxating patella (loose knee joints) and hip dysplasia, both of which cause pain and lameness that may require expensive surgery.
The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of over 300 Finnish Spitz and found 6% dysplastic.
The most common (serious) eye disease is cataracts, which can cause blindness. Glaucoma and PRA can also occur.
Chronic allergies cause terribly itchy skin that can lead to skin infections (hot spots). Some Finnish Spitz have a hormonal imbalance that can cause patchy hair loss.
Finnish Spitz can also suffer from blood-clotting disorders, from an hereditary heart disease called pulmonic stenosis, and from autoimmune diseases such as lupus and pemphigus.
Preventing health problems
Some health problems are inherited. For example, if your dog inherits from his parents the genes for an eye disease called PRA, he will go blind and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
But most health problems can be prevented by the ways you raise your dog.
FREE eBOOK! My free online health care program, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to raise your Finnish Spitz in all the right ways that help prevent health problems. Become your dog's health care champion!
