The most common health problems in Sealyham Terriers:

The most serious health problems in Sealyham Terriers are eye diseases, especially lens luxation (leading to secondary glaucoma) and retinal dysplasia. Other eye diseases that have been reported include dry eye, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).

Inherited deafness is a real concern in Sealys.

Allergies (which cause itchy skin and can lead to bacterial skin infections called pyoderma) are common in all terriers.

Orthopedic diseases should be expected because of the breed's deformed chondrodysplastic build. The most common orthopedic diseases are luxating patella (loose knees), intervertebral disk disease, and hip dysplasia.

This is a very uncommon breed, so it's hard to get a true handle on the extrent of health problems, but with the small gene pool, it's likely that other diseases will become genetically embedded over time.

Can you prevent health problems from happening to YOUR Sealyham Terrier?

Yes, often you can.

  1. Some health problems are genetic, which means inherited from parents. Genetic health issues are common in Sealyham Terriers today because of unwise breeding practices. My book, Dog Quest: Find The Dog Of Your Dreams, shows you how to find a Sealyham Terrier puppy who is genetically healthy.
  2. Other health problems are environmental – caused by the way you raise your dog. My best-selling dog health book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to prevent environmental health problems by raising your Sealyham Terrier puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways.
