Polish Lowland Sheepdog Health Problems and Raising a Polish Lowland Sheepdog Puppy to be Healthy

The most common health problems in Polish Lowland Sheepdogs:
As with most uncommon breeds with a small gene pool, the few health problems that are currently admitted by breeders always increases as inbreeding programs progress.
Hip dysplasia is already a problem. The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of over 300 Polish Lowland Sheepdogs and found 15.5% dysplastic – a very high rate for this size dog. And the true rate is even higher because most of the obviously bad X-rays were not sent in for official evaluation.
Lysosomal storage disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis) is a brain disease that has become a concern in the breed.
Allergies cause itchy skin and can lead to bacterial skin infections (pyoderma). Ear infections (due to profuse hair in the ear canals) must be watched for.
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which leads to blindness, has been reported in the Polish Lowland Sheepdog, and it is likely that other eye diseases are not going to be far behind.
Can you prevent health problems from happening to YOUR Polish Lowland Sheepdog?
Yes, often you can.
- Some health problems are genetic, which means inherited from parents. Genetic health issues are common in Polish Lowland Sheepdogs today because of unwise breeding practices. My book, Dog Quest: Find The Dog Of Your Dreams, shows you how to find a Polish Lowland Sheepdog puppy who is genetically healthy.
- Other health problems are environmental – caused by the way you raise your dog. My best-selling dog health book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to prevent environmental health problems by raising your Polish Lowland Sheepdog puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways.
