Are You Sure Your Vet Is Good?
The most common health problems in Canaan Dogs:
Epilepsy is probably the main concern in Canaan Dogs. Seizures typically start between 2 and 4 years of age.
The most common cancer in the breed appears to be lymphosarcoma.
Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia both occur in Canaan Dogs, but thankfully the rates are very low. According to the Orthopedic Foundation of America, the hip dysplasia rate, based on 330 hip X-rays, is only 2%. That's excellent. Elbow dysplasia is 3%.
Allergies cause itchy skin and can lead to bacterial skin infections (pyoderma).
Hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), luxating patella, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, diabetes, pancreatitis, and degenerative myelopathy have all been reported in Canaan Dogs.
Can you prevent health problems from happening to YOUR Canaan Dog?
Yes, often you can.
- Some health problems are genetic, which means inherited from parents. Genetic health issues are common in Canaan Dogs today because of unwise breeding practices. My book, Dog Quest: Find The Dog Of Your Dreams, shows you how to find a Canaan Dog puppy who is genetically healthy.
- Other health problems are environmental – caused by the way you raise your dog. My best-selling dog health book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to prevent environmental health problems by raising your Canaan Dog puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways.
