The most common health problems in American Water Spaniels:
Skin and ears are problematic in this breed. Most commonly you'll find allergies (causing terribly itchy skin) and ear infections, and sometimes bacterial skin infections (pyoderma) and follicular dysplasia.
The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of 580 American Water Spaniels and found 8% have hip dysplasia, which is not to so good for this size dog. Luxating patellas can also occur.
The most serious eye diseases in American Water Spaniels are progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), cataracts, and retinal dysplasia.
Epilepsy and heart disease have been reported with increasing frequency in American Water Spaniels, and hypothyroidism and diabetes have also been reported.
Can you prevent health problems from happening to YOUR American Water Spaniel?
Yes, often you can.
- Some health problems are genetic, which means inherited from parents. Genetic health issues are common in American Water Spaniels today because of unwise breeding practices. My book, Dog Quest: Find The Dog Of Your Dreams, shows you how to find an American Water Spaniel puppy who is genetically healthy.
- Other health problems are environmental – caused by the way you raise your dog. My best-selling dog health book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to prevent environmental health problems by raising your American Water Spaniel puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways.
