If you're looking for honest advice and information that will help you choose, raise, and train your companion dog, you've come to the right place. We've been online for 12 years and are one of the oldest and most reputable web sites about dogs.

Hello! I'm Michele Welton and I have over 35 years experience as a dog breed advisor, obedience instructor, canine psychologist, veterinary technician, and author of 17 books (about dogs, cats, and pet birds).

I've trained and shown dogs in competitive obedience, agility, herding, tracking, and schutzhund. I've worked with therapy dogs, police dogs, show dogs, and companion dogs.

I know dogs. So when I explain the pros and cons of different dog breeds, different dog foods, or different dog training methods, you're getting honest opinions and information based on a lifetime of experience and research.

Mouse, our blue Chihuahua, and Buffy, our cream Miniature Poodle

That's my husband and me in the photo above, with our Miniature Poodle, Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Buffy was about a year old in that photo. Since she's 12 years old now, I guess that means I must look a little older now, too. Time marches on!

There's Buffy again on the left. Sitting next to her is our 11-year-old Chihuahua, Mouse. Mouse came to live with us when she was diagnosed with liver cancer and nobody wanted her. Happily, we got her cancer into remission. Unhappily, in December of 2014 she was diagnosed with a congenital neurological disorder called syringomyelia. It's a serious condition, so we're all just taking it one day at a time. Acupuncture helps.

Jenna, Papillon

Finally, for those of you who think small dogs are all lap-sitting Jenna. Jenna is a 5-year-old, 7-pound Papillon who is loaded with energy and obsessed with chasing and carrying around squeaky balls and toys. For hours. And hours. Here's what all of Jenna's pictures look like.

Kelly and Princess
Kelly and Princess, the first dogs I trained, when I was a teenager. You can see they were happy dogs, as well as well- trained.

I have lots of experience with medium-size and large dogs, too: German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, Beaucerons, Irish Wolfhounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Beagles, and other breeds, crosses, and mixes.

In New England, I founded the K-Mac Training Center, and in Southern California, The Canine Advisory. My advice on choosing, raising, and training dogs has been featured on the Orange County TV News Channel and in the Orange County Register newspaper.

I'm the author of 17 published books on dogs, cats, and pet birds. And I've written every word of this 1250+ page web site, which has been online since 2000. Over 10,000 dog lovers visit us each day....more than 300,000 dog lovers each month....more than 3 million dog lovers each year.

Just for fun....

  • I grew up in New England playing and coaching baseball, playing pond hockey, and riding horses in barrel racing and gymkhana events.
  • Michele skating
Yes, that's me, practicing with a women's hockey team. Those were the days!
  • Now flash-forward a few decades and even though I wrestle with fibromyalgia (a chronic pain syndrome) and a few other thingies, I still like to skate and swing at pitches in the batting cage.
  • I'm mastering my fear of heights by learning how to rock-climb. And when I go bowling, or target-shooting, or play table tennis, what I lack in skill I try to make up for with enthusiasm!
  • On quieter days, when not doing "dog stuff", you'll find me reading contemporary fiction, listening to classical music, visiting the art museum, or watching a thought-provoking documentary or science fiction show. (I'm particularly fond of my T-shirt that says, "All my favorite TV shows have wormholes.")
