Quick list of Xoloitzcuintle health problems

Hairless dogs typically have skin problems, especially blackheads and plugged hair follicles if the skin gets too dirty or wet. Chronic allergies cause itching and scratching that can tear the skin, which can lead to bacterial infections.

The genes that produce hairlessness also tend to produce bad teeth or missing teeth. Dental disease can be serious in Xolos.

It's hard to determine the incidence of other health problems in this breed because the majority of Xolo breeders aren't testing their breeding stock for anything. Without specific health testing of their parents, pups can end up with bad joints, bad eyes, a bad heart, etc.

Preventing health problems

Some health problems are inherited. For example, if both parents of your Xoloitzcuintle had certificates proving they were tested and cleared of hereditary eye diseases and bad joints, your Xoloitzcuintle would have less risk of developing those conditions. Without such testing, you're taking a risk. Unfortunately, all those Xolo breeders who don't test don't seem to care.

Other health problems can be prevented, or partially prevented, by the ways you raise your dog. If you're serious about doing everything you can for your Xoloitzcuintle, my best-selling book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy, shows you how to raise your Xoloitzcuintle puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways. It will help you be your dog's health care champion!
