Quick list of Tibetan Spaniel health problems

Breeders are deliberately breeding two deformities into Tibetan Spaniels. Their short legs and long back are chondrodysplastic, and their shortened face is brachycephalic. Both deformities are associated with respiratory, orthopedic, and eye problems.

Eye diseases are a major concern in Tibetan Spaniels, as they can lead to blindness. The short face means a small mouth that often doesn't have room for healthy teeth, which leads to dental disease.

Luxating patella (loose knee joints) is a serious concern, with over 12% of the breed affected, the 4th worst rate of all breeds. Bad knees cause pain and lameness and can require expensive surgery. The hip dysplasia rate is 11%, much too high for a small breed. Another common concern is intervertebral disk disease.

Chronic allergies cause itching and scratching, which can lead to skin infections (hot spots).

Preventing health problems

Some health problems are inherited. For example, if both parents of your Tibetan Spaniel have certificates proving they were tested and cleared of hereditary eye diseases and luxating patella, your Tibetan Spaniel has less risk of developing those conditions.

Other health problems can be prevented, or partially prevented, by the ways you raise your dog. If you're serious about doing everything you can for your Tibetan Spaniel, my best-selling book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy, shows you how to raise your Tibetan Spaniel puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways. It will help you be your dog's health care champion!

Complete list of Tibetan Spaniel health problems

Tibetan Spaniels are a deformed breed in two ways – their short legs and long back are chondrodysplastic, and their short pushed-in face is brachycephalic. These deformities are associated with a variety of respiratory, orthopedic, and eye problems.

Hereditary eye diseases are the major concern in Tibetan Spaniels, as they can lead to blindness.

Luxating patellas (loose knee joints) are a serious concern, with over 12% of the breed affected, the 4th worst rate of all breeds. Bad knee joints cause pain and lameness and can require expensive surgery.

Hip dysplasia is also too common in Tibetan Spaniels. The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of 370 Tibetan Spaniels and found 11% dysplastic – much too high for a small dog. Even elbow dysplasia occurs in the Tibetan Spaniel.

Another orthopedic disease associated with their deformed build is intervertebral disk disease.

Chronic allergies cause itchy skin and scratching, which can lead to bacterial infections (hot spots).

Other health problems in Tibetan Spaniels include dental disease, bladder stones, liver shunt, and hernias.
