Beauceron Health Problems and Raising a Beauceron Puppy to be Healthy

The most common health problems in Beaucerons:
Hip dysplasia is the major health problem. The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of 230 Beaucerons and found 16% dysplastic, which is very high. And the true rate is even higher because most of the obviously bad X-rays were not sent in for official evaluation.
Elbow dysplasia is officially 5.5%, but again, the true rate is higher, and when you compare the Beauceron to his cousin, the Briard, the Briard's 0% elbow dysplasia rate looks a heckuva lot better!
Other orthopedic problems in Beaucerons include osteochondritis and panosteitis.
Eye diseases include progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), cataracts, and eyelid abnormalities (entropion and ectropion).
Hypothyroidism, blood-clotting disease (von Willebrand's), and cancer are increasing concerns in Beaucerons.
Allergies often lead to bacterial skin infections (pyoderma).
With their deep chest, Beaucerons are at higher-than-normal risk for the emergency gastrointestinal syndrome called bloat.
Can you prevent health problems from happening to YOUR Beauceron?
Yes, often you can.
- Some health problems are genetic, which means inherited from parents. Genetic health issues are common in Beaucerons today because of unwise breeding practices. My book, Dog Quest: Find The Dog Of Your Dreams, shows you how to find a Beauceron puppy who is genetically healthy.
- Other health problems are environmental – caused by the way you raise your dog. My best-selling dog health book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to prevent environmental health problems by raising your Beauceron puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways.
