The most common health problems in Australian Kelpies:

There isn't much hard information on health problems in this breed, because most Kelpies are kept as working dogs, many of whom are unregistered, and their owners often don't belong to any official organizations where statistics are compiled.

Here's what we do know. According to the Orthopedic Foundation of America, the rate of hip dysplasia in Australian Kelpies is around 6%, which is okay for a medium-size dog.

Eye diseases in Kelpies include progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), cataracts (at 4-6 years old), collie eye anomaly, and coloboma.

A rare neurological disease that can occur in Australian Kelpies is cerebellar ataxia.

Can you prevent health problems from happening to YOUR Australian Kelpie?

Yes, often you can.

  1. Some health problems are genetic, which means inherited from parents. Genetic health issues are common in Australian Kelpies today because of unwise breeding practices. My book, Dog Quest: Find The Dog Of Your Dreams, shows you how to find an Australian Kelpie puppy who is genetically healthy.
  2. Other health problems are environmental – caused by the way you raise your dog. My best-selling dog health book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to prevent environmental health problems by raising your Australian Kelpie puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways.
