Isolated for centuries on the Lofoten Islands off Norway, the Norwegian Lundehund hunted the colorful lunde (or puffin bird), which provided local farmers with meat and downy feathers.

The Norwegian Lundehund is built differently from most other breeds. With his six toes, he can scale steep, slippery rock walls to reach the roosting dens. When squeezed into tight crevasses, he can actually close his ear canals against dirt and moisture, and flatten his flexible shoulders and front legs into a bearskin-rug position so he can crawl more easily. Pretty amazing!
